Lissberger Leiertage 2019

30th May - 2nd June 2019

Invitation to the Lissberger Leiertage 2019

Dear Hurdy Gurdy Friends,

I have the pleasure of inviting you to this year’s Lissberger Leiertage.

This year we would like to take you on a another journey beyond the world of drone instruments. We will be taking a closer look at different zithers from around the world: Mongolia, Madagaskar and the Ukraine. There will be a small presentation of zithers and related instruments from the Musical Instrument Museum Lissberg.

Our team of tutors from last year is back again with the support of a further tutor: I am particularly pleased that Isabel Kraft will be teaching at Lissberg this year. Together with her group "Charivari", Isabel performed mediaeval music in Lissberg back in the 1970s. She is currently working at the University of Würzburg on a research project for European mediaeval monophonic sacred and secular music with latin texts.

The "Alte Schule" has now been fully renovated and a number of rooms for the workhops will be available to us during the Lissberger Leiertage. The "Bürgerstiftung Alte Schule Lißberg" is offering a limited number of beds in shared accommodation in the newly renovated and furnished flats next door. Please contact them directly if you wish to book a bed (contact: Eleonore Betz / e-mail: ellen1_betz@yahoo.de). Accommodation costs are not included in the workshop fee.

As last year, a caterer will be offering inexpensive warm lunchtime and evening meals (there will also be vegetarian options).  The cost of the meals is not included in the workshop fee.

Below you will find information regarding workshop times, details and fees. Information on evening performances and concerts to follow soon.

Regards,

Kurt Reichmann + Team

Workshops for beginners, intermediate and advanced players

Hendrik Ardner / Wiehl

"All beginnings are hard – workshop for newcomers"

In my workshop we’ll be discovering the hurdy gurdy using easy to learn melodies.

Alex Bloch / Berlin

"Die alte Leier –just get started!"

Have fun getting started on the hurdy gurdy and learning easy dance tunes.

Gerhard Ganz / Frankfurt am Main

"Around the wheel"

This workshop is for all those who have already started playing the hurdy gurdy and would like to become more confident with their trompette technique.

Isabel Kraft / Würzburg

"Creatief und Creahoch - komm her, Bordun, ick lieb Dir doch! Lieder und Texte zur Leier, mit Instrumenten und Stimmen aller Art"

We sing and play the hurdy gurdy and get into the "drone zone": voices join the drone, adapt to it, create friction and become opponents - as we like.

Our starting point will be mediaeval and renaissance songs, everything else will develop spontaneously. Please mention any special requests regarding repertoire and instruments when signing up for the workshop.

Nicolas Koch Simms / Denmark

Learn with master hurdy gurdy player Nicolas Koch Simms:

Nicolas will teach various melodies, trumpet techniques and playing styles in order to help you a becoming a better musician and to master your hurdy gurdy.

The workshop is for medium to advanced players and will focus on the individual needs of his students in order for everyone to reach their maximum playing potential.

Scott Marshall / England

Traditional English Adventure Hurdy Gurdy!

For intermediate to advanced level players

In this workshop I will teach some of my techniques of the hurdy gurdy, a different stylistic approach. If you like the sound of my playing and would like to integrate this into your own practice regime please sign up. I will show low speed wheel dynamics, percussive left hand technique, and lots of buzzing ideas.  In the last year I have been discovering a new way of buzzing and this is an interesting thing to share. I will bring my little amplifier and some effects pedals to demonstrate ideas to make a tapestry of sound. Tune-wise I will draw on some of the new music I have been writing, but I thought it would be a lovely thing to teach some of  the traditional English folk tunes my mother sang in the 1970's which I have been adapting to hurdy gurdy. I look forward to seeing you under the oak trees at beautiful Lissberg.

Peter Streng / Kaufbeuren

"Left against Right!"

Don't worry, this is not a political workshop ...

Any hurdy gurdy player who has spent time practicing melodies and trompette will undoubtedly reach that tricky point: how can I achieve independence of the left and right hand?, i.e. the left hand plays a melody while the right hand as an independent percussion instrument plays a set trompette pattern.

In order to achieve this, in my workshop we will be dealing with the following points (in accordance with the needs of the participants):
Right hand:
- We will learn the coup de quatre step by step using precise technique and the use of diagrams.
- We will practice different easy standard rhythms using the different points of the coup de quatre.
Left hand:
- In order to practice independence of the left and right hand we will use short and simple melody loops.
- How to incorporate independence of left and right hand in playing including fingering, moving your hand along the keys and ornamentation. My repertoire consists mainly of Klezmer and Balkan music with a focus on c-minor and typical keys in Balkan music.

Ron Winkler / Annaburg
"All you can (b)eat"
In my workshop we will focus on rhythm and trompetting techniques for almost every occasion.
(Not recommended for absolute beginners.)
